Worker's Compensation 1099 Audit Preparation Tool
A tool that automatically prepares audit-ready Excel spreadsheets based on 1099 Worker's compensation data.
Overview
Built for a local insurance agency to help speed up processes. This program automates the preparation of audit Excel Spreadsheets of 1099 Worker's Compensation data. Runs standalone on each agent's system. Built entirely in Python. Tkinter was used for the GUI, and Pytesseract was used as the OCR so physically scanned copies could be read by the computer. Sped up the preparation of these forms by >80%.
Challenges
Working around the schedules of both clients and team members was a challenge, but proper meeting preparation made any gatherings time efficient and practical. The OCR also wasn't reading the 1099 forms correctly, so we changed the OCR's process to read separate columns independently instead of line by line.
What I learned
System analysis from a business perspective is far different than for personal projects. The standards that need to be met to create a production grade information system are far higher than for weekend ideas. Working with both clients and team members to create an end product is often harder than the actual development itself.
